December 05, 2012 5:44 PM Day’s End and Night Watch

By Ed Kilgore

It’s WaMo’s great friend Blue Girl’s birthday today, and to celebrate it, I recommend you check out the Facebook page she maintains for us, among her other contributions.

In news remainders of the day:

* Pelosi rejects Medicare eligibility age increase as part of fiscal deal.

* Nice work if you can get it: Dick Armey receives reported $8 million severance package upon leaving FreedomWorks in a huff. No wonder conservatives think pensions are unnecessary.

* Rush whines about demonization of “perfectly legal” tax loopholes as loopholes.

* At Ten Miles Square, Austin Frakt argues that any measure that doesn’t increase the efficiency of Medicare or of the health care system should not be called a “reform.”

* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer mocks Bill O’Reilly’s suggestion of affirmative action hiring policies for conservative academics.

And in non-political news:

* Michelob, Michelob Light, Bud Select, Milwaukee’s Best, Old Milwaukee, and MGD are all beers whose U.S. sales have dropped more than 50% since 2006.

Selah.

And they're now making the same mistake in Syria.

Beer sales for conglomerate-owned brands have gone down. Sales of brews from more regional microbreweries have gone up. This is a win-win situation. Consumers are drinking better beer, and the profits are going to local and regional breweries.

rush might want to consider all the money he pays accountants in order not to pay that money to uncle sam.

Well, beer from big conglomerate companies generally suck.

They continue trying to put lipstick on a pig -- cool aluminum bottles! Clever labels that tell you when the beer's cold! An opening that pours the beer perfectly! -- but if what's inside sucks, then no manner of gee-whiz marketing ploys will make what sucks a better beer.

Generally, european beers are superior (as are microbrews mostly), because typically each region or city makes its own local beer, and by law brewers can't add preservatives and other chemicals. And it is these 'additives' that make a crappy beer even crappier, not to mention contributing to hangovers and that horrible feeling the next morning. You can drink a comparative boatload of German beer and not feel too bad the next day largely because of this. But to require such things here in the US equals socialism! Communism! The horror!
