December 13, 2012 1:37 PM Lunch Buffet

By Ed Kilgore

Thinking about heading either to Acme Oyster House for a shrimp po-boy, or over to Napolean House for the muffuletta (yes, yes, I know Central Grocery is where you are supposed to go for that, but can’t get a sazerac there!). There are better and trendier places to eat in Nawlins, but it’s been a while since I was here, so visits to the Iconics come first.

In any event, here are some mid-day treats for your own consumption:

* New Pew survey latest to show Obama/Democrats with significant advantage on most fiscal-talks topics, especially taxes.

* Kim Jong Un—a.k.a. “The Sexiest Man Alive”—winning Time’s Person of the Year reader poll.

* Dana Milbank throws pity-party for Joe Lieberman’s “sad” farewell from the Senate.

* TNR’s Nate Cohn positively handicaps potential Corey Booker run against Chris Christie.

* TPM’s Ryan Reilly reports former Rep. Duke Cunningham of California released from prison into a halfway house right here in New Orleans.

And in nonpolitical news:

* Baba Wawa names David Petraeus “Most Fascinating Person of 2012,” making it clear his extracurriculars were the reason for the “honor.”

Back after a savory bite.

America is much improved by the departures of both Joe Lieberman and Jim DeMint from the Senate. If either have ever contributed to the improvement of America it certainly does not show now.

Even money he even got the Duke-Stir sent through the Panama Canal so she'd be ready and waiting for him.

Which, I'm certain, makes not one bit of difference to TeaBag GOPers.

Napoleon House is a perfectly good place to go for a muffaletta. I think I might have been disappointed with the sazerac last time I was there (vaguely recall that it was too sweet, but I might be misremembering), but even a less-than-ideal sazerac is better than no sazerac.

Hmph. I guess I'll flaunt my Mai-Tai (with paper umbrella) now.

Make sure you drop by Felix's next door to Acme for some oyster bar action!

Felix's, next door to Acme was my favorite spot for some oyster bar action!

you forget that lieberman played a critical role in overturning don't ask don't tell. of course the legislation would not have seen the light of day had lieberman's choice for president in 2008 had gotten elected. but lieberman at least on some social issues occasionally could find his way to vote on the side of the angels.

demint, well, not so much. in fact, not at all. nor i'm sure will his successor.

if you indulge in raw oysters, make sure they're not from grand isle. that area was heavily oiled by the bp spill, and there's still weathered gunk lying about in the sediment.

One of the best new restaurants in the French Quarter is Sylvain on Chartres St just off Jackson Square. Give it a try.

Go to Jacque Imo's in Uptown. (http://jacques-imos.com/) Have the Alligator Cheesecake for an app and the best fried chicken (Its the legendary Austin Leslie's recipe) in the world for an entree.

Then saunter next door to the Maple Leaf for music.

Do yourself a favor -- go by The Gumbo Shoppe before you leave town.

Back in the day, at least, the best muffuletta I ever had was at a place one street past the LSU campus gate in Tigertown, Baton Rouge, whose name I disremember. Central Market's was a dry and pallid impression, by comparison. To my very great surprise when I finally had it. Cafe du monde beignets, though, were tops.

Also, if it's still there, a little one-story place off Canal St behind the Tulane hospital, for po boys.
