By Ed Kilgore

Belated thanks to Kathleen, Ryan and Sam for covering PA during the last week-and-a-half. I’l be back to the regular schedule the day after Xmas, and will try to make some cogent year-end observations. But here are some near-holiday news bites:

* Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) popped for a DUI in Virginia after running a red light and failing “several” field sobriety tests.

* Tagg Romney says his dad had very little interest in becoming President of the United States. Guess that’s why he spent close to six years running for the gig, eh?

* On the other hand, Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino says he wants to get into politics.

* Backlash to Hagel gaining steam.

* New WaPo/ABC poll shows drop in optimism—but turns out most of the drop in confidence is among Republicans.

And in non-political news:

* The Hobbit leading pre-Xmas box office receipts.

Back after a few frantic Christmas Eve chores.

Since I suppose you, like me, think that we can never have too much Schadenfreude, here’s a terrific piece about the Conserative Crazy Old Coot Cruise, sponsored by The National Review:

And apparently, the tropical sun and sea, doesn't do anything to help them with their cognitive dissonance.

It's kind of long, but believe me, it's well worth it.

I may save it to my computer, because it'll be worth re-reading at some point later on in the winter. It'll warm the cockles of my heart – and there’s nothing that makes me happier, than warm cockles on a winter evening - unless someone else is warming them. ;-)

So basically Tagg Romney is saying, "Psych, suckas!" in a one-percent style.

    * Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) popped for a DUI in Virginia [...] The Crapo is, like Romney, a Mormon bishop; he's not even supposed to drink coffee or Coke. But, hey... quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi, (what Jove is allowed, an ox is not allowed), right?

Personally, I wasn't altogether surprised by Tagg's statement about his Dad. Yes, I know, running for President has been his only occupation for 6 years but I've always had a feeling that his awkwardness in public stemmed at least in part from not doing it wholeheartedly. I'd bet my bottom dollar (not being a Mormon, I'm allowed) that he did it to please Ann; I think she's the driving force of that family, and certainly he seems to be the most uxorious and obedient (as well as adoring) of husbands. I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall once she had him in private after the concession...

Price(less) Tagg Romney. Family still prone to lies, I surmise. Grapes tasting a wee bit sour these days. Imagine the true scenario of family rumination, recrimination and major regrets.
Like the kid who desperately wants your basketball or new bike, you won't lend it, and he says he hated it anyway.
