By Ed Kilgore

Having already planned to go on a serious diet January 1 (or maybe January 2, in light of the need for a pre-Capital One Bowl tailgate on New Year’s Day), I chowed down on buttered biscuits for breakfast this morning. Wish I could share. But here are some mid-day news crumbs:

* Reports bubbling up that Obama has offered GOPers a “scaled down” fiscal deal that extends Bush tax cuts for income under $400k, splits difference on estate tax, delays sequestration, lets payroll tax holiday expire, drops stimulus demands (other than unemployment extension), ignores debt limit. More on this later.

* Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf dies at 78.

* Dallas Morning News reports former Dewhurst campaign manager under criminal investigation for pocketing $600k in GOP contributions.

* Des Moines Register reports low water levels could halt commercial traffic on Mississippi River next week. Remember that next time you’re told economic needs bar action on climate change.

* Yglesias notes the immediately dire “fiscal cliff” items that aren’t on either side’s negotiating lists (e.g., payroll tax holiday extension, wind production tax credit, dairy subsidies).

And in non-political news:

* Comic book icon Stan Lee turns 90 today.

Back after a short break to bundle up and deal with this chilly Central Coast morning.

If Obama and the Democrats put such a "'scaled down' fiscal deal" on the table, let alone approve it, they're hopeless . . .
P.S. I just read a story on TPM that has the Senate Democrats, at least, uninterested in such a deal. But I still don't trust Obama's negotiating skills, even after that WSJ article of a week or so ago which has him nailed Boehner's balls to the wall. Just the fact that Obama gave up so easily on the 250K limit last week has me worried he'll be as stupid as in the debt limit talks of last year.

One of the reasons for the low level of the Mississippi River is the diversion of lots of water for fracking in North Dakota. There may be some question about the impact of fracking on the quality of local drinking water, but there is absolutely no question about the impact of fracking on the amount of river water in the Mississippi basin.

Fracking is adversely affecting the economic activity of shipping via the Mississippi River. Not that most of the media has picked up on this story.

For god's sake sjw why is it that every time Obama doesn't stomp on the balls of his opponents pansy assed liberals like you always whine and cry about not getting everything. As of yet he hasn't given them anything and if he does that's what they call compromising. Or are you just as adament that your as 100% right as the teabaggers are?

  • sjw on December 28, 2012 2:48 PM:

Wow, Mr. Gandalf, for a wizard you're awfully pissy. Obama caved on the 250K after talking for months that 250K was the deal. One might legitimately take it as a campaign promise. And he broke that promise.

P.S. I'd guess I'm right about half the time. Truth comes through dialogue.

Normally I wouldn't get into a tit-for-tat but in your case sjw I'll make an exception. Your P.S. says it all.
