By Ed Kilgore

I struggled for a good while with the last post about race and the American Party System for all kinds of obvious reasons involving the complexity of the subject and my own Scalawag identity. If you read the latest issue of the Monthly on “Race, History, and Obama’s Second Term” you may usefully struggle with some conflicts of your own.

In any event, here are some remains of the day:

* Jenny Sanford denies us the spectacle of a congressional primary battle with her ex-husband.

* Stateline’s Jim Malewitz reports that a Kansas court has declared the state’s GOP-dictated public school funding cuts deny a constitutional right to a “suitable” education.

* We knew this was coming: U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) threatens impeachment proceedings if Obama seeks gun regulations via executive order.

* At Ten Miles Square, Henry Farrell eloquently eulogizes the late Aaron Swartz.

* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer criticizes calls for test measuring “noncognitive” skills of college applicants sign of institutional laziness in interviewing and evaluating potential students.

And in non-political news:

* Microsoft’s Ballmer and hedge fund biggie Hansen close to deal to buy Sacramento Kings and build team new arena in Seattle.

Having complained this morning about the (relatively, for the locale) cold temperatures, I should probably report the sun is shining and it’s only moderately miserable for those of us unwilling or unable to afford PG&E heating bills. So here’s Heatwave performing “Boogie Nights” circa 1977.

Selah.

    Bring it on.

Great opportunity for the Dems to take back the House.

Sure hope Brownback continues to lose in the courts, what disgraceful so called governance in the state of Kansas. Another good Christian, Catholic in his case, giving out big tax breaks and tossing school children overboard. Except for the fact that there are are many decent people in these reactionary states like Kansas, Texas and others, I wish we in saner locales could toss them overboard.

The Heatwave video and its ridiculous costumes, led me to the work of Rod Temperton:

The Internet is a wonderful thing.
