Political Animal

January 31, 2013 5:30 PM Day’s End and Night Watch

By Ed Kilgore

Want to know why I don’t watch political TV much? Things like discovering that listening to Michelle Malkin is even more unpleasant than reading her.

Here are some remains of the political day:

* Ted Cruz opens up the oppo research bag on Chuck Hagel and pulls out a video of the Defense Secretary nominee appearing on—gasp!—Al Jazeera.

* Salon’s Steve Koracki thinks it’s time Democrats take seriously the possibility that Sen. Bob Menendez could be in real trouble.

* TAP’s Abby Rapoport notes state-level Republicans did pretty well in 2012—even as they continued to move hard right.

* At Ten Miles Square, Seth Masket reports Obama field effort effective in 2012, but didn’t add as much value as it did in ‘08.

* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer reports on Western Oklahoma State College’s decision to shut down online courses that had become magnet for college athletes looking for easy credits.

And in non-political news:

* Puppy Bowl preview! Might want to bookmark in case that football game is a blowout.

In closing today, here’s another cut from Living Colour, covering “Final Solution” in 1990. Some serious rocking.

From slate.com today - captcha is dying?

...So Wednesday’s news that Ticketmaster is abandoning CAPTCHA feels like a sort of vindication to me. It hasn't just been me. The system is to blame....

Ted Cruz.....a year from now he'll be nationally known, and for all the wrong reasons. He crushed David Dewhurst in the senate primary in Texas, out crazying a crazy guy. Somebody needs to be looking into whose bankroll is behind Cruz. FYI, he barely speaks Spanish and is Cuban by ancestry.

Reading Steve Koracki's piece on Mendez is a reminder why I don't read Salon anymore. Perpetuating anything Tucker Carlson says is irresponsible.

After two days of Cruz, I need a Silkwood shower. To his credit, one subject on which he's proven to be an expert is bullying. My fear is that the Senate leadership mistakes his fearless pomposity as strength, and that MSM adulation will follow.

Nothing the Republicans pull out of their Tickle Trunk in the way of Gotcha photos is ever going to top Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands - howdy, podnuh! - with Saddam Hussein.

    That is all.

("Final Solution" is a Pere Ubu tune, magnificently covered by Living Color.)
