Running late because I got suckered into paying attention to the painfully slow House Speaker election. Here’s some slightly tardy mid-day news bites:

* Obama signs defense reauthorization bill despite earlier veto threats over language restricting power to close Gitmo.

* HRC reiterates intention to testify on Benghazi pseudo-scandal.

* Paul Broun and Louie Gohmert both vote for former Member Allen West for Speaker. Bohner re-elected, but not in a joyful manner.

* TAP’s Abby Rapoport looks ahead to state actions on same-sex marriage in 2013.

* Biggest hangup in action on filibuster reform is resistance among some Senate Dems to imposing it via the “constitutional option” rather than a deal with Republicans.

And in non-political news:

* Study shows 1 in 24 American adults admit they recently fell asleep at the wheel. Drive defensively, folks.

Back in a few.

So we have Speaker Boehner to continue to kick around, eh? I'll take my blessings where I find them.

As for fillibuster reform, after McConnell's little performance earlier I can't see Reid willing to trust him too far. Certainly not with anything this important. The less input from Republicans, the better.

I think the names Gomert and Broun if there not already will soon be synonymous with douche bag.

  • TomParmenter on January 03, 2013 2:56 PM:

Hilarious, the idea that after decades of accusations of being a murderous adulterous lesbian radical, Hillary Clinton is afraid of a nearly empty talking point.

I am so glad Allen West was not elected Speaker of the House. He's said way too much already.

I often think that Gohmert's real name is Gomerel.

  • MuddyLee on January 03, 2013 4:14 PM:

Wonder why Mick Mulvaney of SC's Fifth District refused to vote? Did he finally realize Ayn Rand isn't a House member? Did he not get a call from Jim DeMint telling him what he should do? If he didn't like Boehner, why didn't he pick somebody else? Why not Michele Bachmann, Mick? She's as crazy as Allen West, but she also won re-election.

"Obama signs defense reauthorization bill despite earlier veto threats over language restricting power to close Gitmo".

That's not news. It would be news if he had made good on his threats.

Gohmert and Broun need mental health work ups and I'm not kidding.

Please don't disparage Louis Gomert. Where else can you go for such fun reading everyday. This man is a walking bin of malapropisms, fantasy facts, and misguided mis-knowledge that he provides an endless source of amusement.

I for one hope that he is around for a long time.
