March 05, 2013 4:25 PM Bad Week For the Daily Caller

By Ed Kilgore

It’s hard to remember just now, but Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller was initially ballyhooed as a serious non-partisan news gathering organization that would pursue stories the “liberal media” ignored for partisan reasons, but wouldn’t wallow in the muck.

Right now the site is going to the mats to defend an increasingly suspect but long-standing set of claims that Sen. Bob Menendez paid for sex from prostitutes hired by a man who was subsequently investigated by the FBI on charges that do not seem to have anything to do with prostitution.

On another front, the DC seems to be determined to slut-shame Ashley Judd out of a potential race against Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, beginning with a snarky piece on her nude film appearances. Needless to say, Scott Brown did not get this kind of treatment from conservative media when he ran for the Senate after posing nude for a Cosmopolitan center-fold. And if actors are going to be held responsible for the poses they assume in acting roles, it’s time to retroactively impeach former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on multiple counts.

In any event, the DC’s continued descent into tabloid-land in pursuit of partisan hit jobs—taking out a Democratic senator in New Jersey and making sure one is not elected in Kentucky—is doing some serious damage to what’s left of its reputation. What I don’t know is if Tucker Carlson still cares.

...what's left of its reputation." Daily Caller had a reputation?

When I was in high school, the only people who had a "reputation" were sluts.

Well, to be fair, Ms. Judd had some pretty, uhm... er... pretty... pretty great "assets!"
Did I mention that the 'assets' were 'pretty?'

While Mr. Brown could hide his manhood behind his hand, and a staple

And a staple would be more than Tucker would ever need to hide his limpho... uhm... er... MANhood.

  • Eric on March 05, 2013 4:53 PM:

Wait wait, Tucker Carlson cares about something other than himself?

  • Peter C on March 05, 2013 4:55 PM:

Tucker Carlson has always been a hack.

The 'liberal media' has always been a delusion and false conception of the ultra-right perpetuated to deflect the criticism which inevitiably results when Conservative ideas are subjected to 'journalism'.

  • E.Hatt-Swank on March 05, 2013 5:03 PM:

Actually, Ed, I think I can answer your last thought there with a very high degree of confidence: No, Tucker Carlson does not care. Tucker Carlson practically defines the term 'bottom-feeder'.

  • Reginald Perrin on March 05, 2013 5:12 PM:

"What I donít know is if Tucker Carlson still cares."

Oh, I think you know that he doesn't. And, in fact, that he never really did.

  • Lifelong Dem on March 05, 2013 5:16 PM:

Just out of curiosity, what has the Daily Crawler had to say about Mark Sanford?

  • cwolf on March 05, 2013 5:22 PM:

    Tucker Carlson's Reputation???
I seem to recall that Jon Stewart ground Tucker Carlson's Reputation into dust, lit it on fire, stomped it, spit on it and buried it in hell.

  • Kathryn on March 05, 2013 9:03 PM:

The only thing Tucker Carlson cares about is maintaining his lifestyle by whatever means necessary. Probably dreaming but here's hoping that the identity of the person who hired these women and gave them a script to recite is uncovered followed by the unearthing of who paid that person.

  • R on March 05, 2013 9:05 PM:

If Ashley Judd decides to run, I'll send her a donation just to piss Carlson off, and I bet I'm not the only one.

  • docdave on March 05, 2013 10:52 PM:

    Uh-oh..are we slut-shaming Tucker Carlson?
Remember, folks, he cared--about getting out of Arkansas. Don't ask him for much more.

  • biggerbox on March 06, 2013 1:35 AM:

Oh. my. god. The Ashley Judd thing made me momentarily think if her opponent had ever appeared naked, and the mental image of Mitch McConnell less-than-fully-clothed was so horrifying...

I think I passed out for a second.

Maybe the Daily Caller can ask someone at Mr. Turtle magazine for the rundown on McConnell's appearances, and whether they were 'without shell', as they say?

"Tucker Carlson has always been a hack."

I'm not sure that's fair. There were some glimmers at the start of his career as a writer that Carlson might be actually good for something and if you examine his early television career, there were signs that he wanted to basically be a conservative version of Rachel Maddow. It seems to be there were several things that prevented him from becoming that.

    1. While he's smarter than Jonah Goldberg, Tucker's not really in the same league as Maddow when it comes to smarts.

    2. Tucker is, frankly, kind of a juvenile dick and enjoys being one.

    3. The Right Wing is so screwed up that trying to be an actual conservative journalist would require you to regularly go to war against the folks on your own side.

    4. The relatively easy money from being just another wingnut screecher was too hard to turn down.
