March 07, 2013 11:10 AM Murder!

By Ed Kilgore

Every now and then you’ll read an item about some crazy right-wing legislator saying something like this Utah solon mocked at Think Progress yesterday:

“In a state where we can still allow people to kill their babies, we want to make it a felony to let chickens fight for the purpose of which they were raised,” said Sen. Allen Christensen, R-North Ogden.
Christensen said cockfighting is not “beautiful” or “wonderful.” But the birds “naturally want to do this thing in their lives and we’re going to send their owners to prison for this, yet we allow people to go ahead and murder their unborn babies.”

And outrage, eh? But it’s useful to remind oneself that tone aside, this yahoo is articulating the position of the national Republican Party and nearly all of its elected officials, committed as they are to the recriminalization of abortion.

Technically, the charge that abortion is “murder” is not one that all anti-choicers would make, given the legal definition of the term with scienter requirements and all. And yeah, as we famously were reminded last year, many Republicans favor vast and generous exemptions from a general policy of criminalizing abortion for victims of rape and incest.

But Sen. Christensen isn’t all that far from the mainstream of his party on the underlying policy. He’s just being impolitic—not to mention tacky—in calling attention to it in so graphic a manner.

Yup....nothing a rooster wants more than to have steel spurs attached to his feet so his natural fighting instinct will result not in a natural combat with another rooster and establishment of dominance, but instead lead to puncture wounds and often the death of one bird or both.....while humans stand around and bet large amounts of money on who lives and who dies.

Very humane.....so why can't we sick pit bulls on real bulls or bulldogs on bears? How about gladiators and lions?

If they keep blocking our right to legally run bloody animal battles, before you know it, the only thing left will be American Idol 24/7.

Why is it that we throw people in prison at all when we allow the murders of little babies to go unpunished is beyond me. Our laws say that rape is less heinous than murder, so I wonder why we prosecute this crime at all? that is, of course, if the whole thing isnt shut down, and it leads to a pregnancy and abortion. These libtards really screwed the pooch on this one, with these laws and all that

My guess is, that even though he's FOR chicken-fights, when it came time to serve his country, this chicken-sh*t probably didn't!

Maybe Bobby Jindall can come up there to Utah, and personally point out what part of "Not being the stupid party," this idiot missed.

They just can't help themselves, now can they?

committed as they are to the recriminalization of abortion.

Today's GOTea: committed to the sanctity of human life and every possible protection for the average citizen, from conception all the way to birth.

I'll pay attention when the anti-choice shouters reconcile their "abortion is murder" stance with their fixation on the death penalty, "border security / illegal immigration" and 2nd-Amendment-centric armed citizenry.

Of course, it would only further inflame Sen. Christentsen's self-righteous outrage to point out to him that roosters are sentient, conscious creatures, while fetuses are neither.

Ignoring the notion that roosters "want" to do anything, let alone fight for reasons beyond protecting their flock - aren't wingers the ones who love to boil down human nature to "competitiveness" and "survival of the fittest"? That war, death and killing is in our DNA?
