Thursday’s looking to be a pretty entertaining day (and perhaps night) around the ol’ U.S. Senate. Aside from the cloture vote on proceeding to the consideration of gun legislation I just wrote about, the legendary Gang of Eight is signaling that it will release its long-awaited comprehensive immigration reform proposal on that day.
Since it seems there are still wrinkles to iron out on provisions involving agricultural workers, the big moment could get pushed into next week. And it would not be shocking if the Gang of Eight wound up shrinking, particularly if Sen. Marco Rubio continues to see the need to push the legislation from a safe distance (perhaps in conjunction with his buddy in the nativist House GOP Caucus, Raul Labrodor).
Pity the poor Hill reporters if it transpires that both of the big non-fiscal issues of 2013, guns and immigration, make big news in the Senate on the same day. It’s enough to make you think continuing news staffing cutbacks might not be a good idea.
