Political Animal

June 22, 2013 10:07 AM Saturday Morning News Roundup

By Ed Kilgore

Since I’m accustomed to spending Saturday morning willfully ignoring political news, Saturday blogging feels a bit strange for me. So let’s start with a quick roundup of the stories people will be talking about in the Sunday papers and on the Sunday shows:

* Justice Department charges Edward Snowden with two violations of the Espionage Act and also with theft of government property. It also formally requests extradition of Snowden from Hong Kong. Speedy extradition is very unlikely, even if Snowden stays in Hong Kong.

* Federal investigation of VA Gov. Bob McDonnell’s receipt of illegal gifts and/or possible bribes getting bigger and more serious.

* Rick Hasen explains why Supreme Court is taking so long to decide big cases.

* Politico’s Josh Gerstein has useful piece on actual feasibility of a “border surge,” as observers begin to focus on the Corker-Hoeven Amendment as something other than just a political fix.

* MSM reports from Netroots Nation focusing on lack of anger at Obama on left.

And in sorta non-political news:

* Food Network won’t renew Paula Deen’s contract after flap over racial comments. More on that later.

Back with more directly.
