July 02, 2013 6:25 PM Day’s End and Night Watch

By Ed Kilgore

Ah, what a long day, but a productive one, from my perspective looking back at several posts that I hope get a decent readership. But there’s always more news coming over the transom, so here are some final items:

* Morsi currently speaking to Egyptian people on television; looks like he’s not at all backing down.

* Amazing: Paula Deen’s lawyers cite Prop 8 decision by SCOTUS to dispute standing of white plantiff in the discrimination case that brought her down.

* At TAP, Harold Meyerson reports a rare union victory as UNITE NOW reaches agreement with Hyatt chain allowing unionization efforts to proceed.

* At Ten Miles Square, voting rights expert Rick Valelly examines the wreckage of the Voting Rights Act and explores the useful remainders.

* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer reports on firing of celebrated education reformer Paul Vallas from job as superintendent of schools in Brideport, Connecticut.

And in non-political news:

* Media bedlam already engulfing hospital where royal baby due to arrive.

Let’s close the day with more Sam Cooke, performing “Nothing Can Change This Love” at the Harlem Square Club in 1963.

Selah.
