July 04, 2013 2:38 PM Independence

By Ed Kilgore

One thing July 4th means to most (though hardly all) Americans is independence from work, so I’m going to wrap up the blogging and do a little celebrating myself.

To my shock, I’ve discovered that Maddowblog has (barring breaking news) shut down after one morning post for today and tomorrow. Since it’s insane to try to outwork Brother Benen, I’ll be on another relaxed holiday schedule here tomorrow as well.

So enjoy your day. Independence Day isn’t just about the launch of a colonial rebellion 237 years ago, or about politics or even patriotism: it’s a testament to “independence” in all its meanings. Let’s close the day with the startling 1982 hit from the late disco queen Donna Summer, which celebrates the “State of Independence” as humankind’s true birthright and destiny. If you can watch this whole thing without swaying a bit yourself, it’s time for an attitude adjustment:

Selah.
