Ezra Klein offers a sobering reminder of why it matters that the United States and Russia are squabbling, above and beyond the fate of Syria or of Edward Snowden, with this headline: “94% of the world’s nuclear weapons are in Russia and the U.S.” And being Ezra Klein, he’s got a chart to prove it.
I might add for the benefit of those who have been wondering if Senate candidate Michelle Nunn has some of the bad old opinions of her father, Sam Nunn, I will note that whatever his other predilections, Nunn’s devoted most of his time since leaving the Senate (and quite a bit of time before then) trying to avoid an accidental U.S./Soviet nuclear war, and encouraging both nations to nail down and scale down their nukes. Indeed, one reason I’m sure the president hasn’t forgotten this problem is that Nunn was his principal advisor on the subject before he ran for president (which helps explain why Nunn endorsed him pretty early in 2008).
