October 28, 2013 10:27 AM Back to Benghazi!

By Ed Kilgore

Politics 101 holds that when your party has been divided, you look for a sure-fire uniter—particularly if you are on the wrong side of the divide. So the least surprising thing imaginable is that battered Republicans are raising hoarse voices one more time on Benghazi!, using a 60 Minutes report that adds another “eyewitness” to the universally accepted narrative that the U.S. did not do enough to protect consular officials in Libya in September 2012.

It’s even less surprising that Lindsey Graham—who probably did more to buttress his 2014 primary opponents during the manufactured fiscal crisis than any other Republican leader not named “McConnell”—is leading the lurch back into Benghazi-mania:

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy Monday morning that he intended to block every Senate appointment until the survivors of Benghazi were made available to a congressional committee for testimony.

If Graham pursues this line of action, it will among other things blow up the tenuous Senate detente on filibuster reform (though it was already in immediate danger as Harry Reid prepares to call for votes on three D.C. Court of Appeals nominees).

But hey—what’s that compared to the good intra-GOP feelings associated with endless wallowing in Benghazi!
