December 24, 2013 3:20 PM A Merrier Christmas For Liberal Christians

By Ed Kilgore

The Christmas celebration ought to be relatively free of politics, but we are in an era of politicized religion, and politics masquerading as religion, so some of it is inescapable.

As I noted in a column today for TPMCafe, the atmospherics for liberal Christians are better this year, partly thanks to Pope Francis, partly due to a conservative evangelical backlash against fealty to the Republican Party, and partly because there’s even some good demographic news.

One of the things that’s a bit unusual about Political Animal is that our political coverage does not stop when such complex and controversial topics as religion and culture come up, and we’re reasonably good at supplying the kind of historical context to the “culture wars” about which the MSM are typically clueless (to use the technical term for the problem). If you appreciate this sort of wide lens view of politics, it’s not too late for a small holiday gift: a tax-deductible donation to the Washington Monthly. Thanks for helping to keep the candles burning here!
