Political Animal

December 24, 2013 9:07 AM Smartest Guy in the Primaries

By Ed Kilgore

In a bit of Christmas Eve merriment, I was amused to see this Politico report from Burgess Everett:

It is “very obvious” that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will run for president in 2016, according to Sen. David Vitter.
Vitter said Jindal, a Republican, is indeed already laying the groundwork in pursuit of the 2016 GOP nomination, but wouldn’t say whether he will support his home-state governor in what is certain to be a brutal Republican primary season.

So Bobby’s running for president, but the guy slotted to succeed him as Republican governor of his state won’t even commit to supporting him.

Vitter’s not the only Louisianan who’s lukewarm about the one-time Boy Wonder. Jindal seems to be thinking again about a presidential bid because because his job approval ratio (according to one recent poll) has risen all the way to 42/55.

So at this point the 2016 GOP presidential field could include, in alphabetical order: Bush, Christie, Cruz, Huckabee, Jindal, Kasich, Paul, Perry, Rubio, Ryan, Santorum, and Walker. Quite the dirty dozen, eh? And quite a mid-winter’s fantasy for political writers—and Democrats.
