January 24, 2014 6:16 PM Day’s End and Weekend Watch

By Ed Kilgore

I’m guessing next week will bring us a better harvest of hard news, but it’s been good shooting the breeze with you all anyway.

Here are some remains of the day:

* CBS poll shows Obama approval rating at 46%, up from 42% in December and 37% in November.

* Kentucky poll shows 79%—and 60% of GOPers—agreeing with Gov. Steve Beshear’s decision to expand Medicaid.

* SCOTUS extends stay on enforcement of contraception coverage mandate for certain religious nonprofits while case on appeal.

* At Ten Miles Square, Seth Masket explores significance (he doesn’t find much) in three-headed GOP response to SOTU.

* At College Guide, Robert Kelchen notes reluctance of academics to call college ratings “college ratings.”

And in non-political news:

* Dow drops 318 points as variety of growth fears from around the globe combine to makes investors jittery.

That’s it for the day. Martin Longman will be back for weekend blogging; Kathleen Geier should be back next week.

Let’s close for the week that began with MLK Day and ended with the anniversary of the abolition of the poll tax with Sam Cooke’s immortal “A Change Is Gonna Come.”
