Pat Buchanan manages to inject his cranky xenophobia into practically every social and political issue in existence, so it’s not surprising he would do so in the area of drug policy. This week on The McLaughlin Group he warned that marijuana legalization will attract hordes of Latin American drug cartels to the good old U.S. of A. Washington Monthly editor in chief Paul Glastris registers amusement at this novel theory.
Buchanan, by the way, also repeats the canard about marijuana as a gateway drug. I thought that myth went out with shoulder pads, parachute pants, and other unfortunate artifacts the “just say no” 80s, but apparently not. Suffice it to say it has long been debunked
