January 06, 2014 11:10 AM RNC To Pause For Anti-Choice Rally

By Ed Kilgore

Here’s a little news item for those of you who have bought the periodic line that the Republican Party has learned its lesson about “social issues,” and will avoid them like the plague in 2014 or 2016:

The Republican National Committee will free up a couple of hours during its winter meeting this January so members can attend the annual March for Life in Washington, CNN confirmed Monday.
The rally, a major event in the anti-abortion rights movement, is scheduled for January 22, when the three-day RNC winter meeting is set to begin. The date also marks the 41st anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court ruling, known as Roe v. Wade, in favor of abortion rights….
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus made the decision to shift part of the winter meeting’s schedule to allow some time for the march and will attend the rally, himself. The RNC will also provide buses so members can get to and from the rally.

This is a tribute by a political party to one of its major constituency groups, and also reflects the virtual unanimity—however obscured by “battles” over this or that minor difference of opinion on policy details like rape or incest exclusions—of the GOP’s opposition to basic reproductive rights. It should be remembered next time some Republican “strategist” says the party is focused like a laser beam on economic or size-of-government issues.
