Today’s news of the absurd is that former congressman and governor Edwin Edwards of Louisiana, more recently a long-term guest at federal correctional facilities and a reality-show star, is talking about running for the 6th district congressional seat being vacated by Senate candidate Bill Cassidy.
Edwards, who will turn 87 before election day, says he thinks he will make a runoff after the November 4 “jungle primary” because “I’m the only hope Democrats have here,” which may be true since the district carries a Cook PVI rating of R+19. Perhaps it can be arranged for the field to include another ex-con, former KKK leader David Duke (who was recently expelled from Italy), and the two can reenact the “Race from Hell,” the 1991 gubernatorial contest which Edwards won on the informal slogan of “Vote for the Crook. It’s Important.”
