March 17, 2014 5:05 PM Faithful Gun Violence Opponents

By Ed Kilgore

Well, talk about being hoisted on my own petard.

My friend Sarah Posner wrote a post at Religion Dispatches reporting somewhat skeptically the complaints of liberal Christians—including yours truly—who complained of secular media ignorance and/or contempt for them, reinforcing conservative claims that the only authentic faith communities were their own. As a test of this hypothesis, she checked for media coverage of a major ecumenical event this last weekend held by Faiths United To Prevent Gun Violence. There was very little, including none right here at PA. I can hardly complain when secular media do no better than I do.

But I would add that the publicity arms of non-conservative religious groups need to do a better job, too. I am sure my own small mainline Protestant church would have been happy to participate in the weekend events, had we known of it. So the circle of indifference towards the efforts of liberal religious folk is the work of many hands.
