April 14, 2014 5:30 PM Are the Taxes Too Damn High?

By Ed Kilgore

Gallup has updated its longstanding research on basic American attitudes about taxes, and word up to the Tea Party: 54% of respondents say they consider their taxes fair. That’s actually down from 64% in 2003, but there’s a pretty simple reason: a plurality of Republicans now consider their taxes unfair, as do a majority of people with incomes over $75,000 a year.

It would be interesting to learn if the souring of attitudes on taxes among Republicans is attributable to higher taxes (which hasn’t actually occurred for most Americans) or to the partisan identity of the President of the United States. Life has just gotten worse in general, it seems, since the salad days of George W. Bush.
