I’m sure George Will is cooking up a Verizon-bashing column right now in response to the company’s new commercial about science and sexism:
The commercial—part of the company’s “Inspire Her Mind” campaign—effectively makes the point that there is, for want of a better phrase, a Cold War on Women going on at home and in the classroom, a war with innumerable casualties. It’s a depressing commercial, in the sense that one cannot watch it without thinking of the millions of young women who could have cured diseases and healed the partisan divide on such issues as climate change, but who were discouraged from pursuing careers in science because of this cold war.
Today, girls with the potential to be the next Katharine Hayhoe or Jennifer Francis or Heidi Cullen or Brenda Ekwurzel were born. It’s up to the parents of those girls to encourage their children to realize their potential. If they fail to do so, those parents will effectively destroy their children, and our civilization as well.
