July 17, 2014 4:13 PM Israel Launches Ground Assault on Gaza

By Ed Kilgore

There’s more traumatic breaking news this afternoon, believe it or not: Israel has sent ground troops into Gaza. It’s not clear at this point whether the invasion is a limited operation aimed at closing off infiltration tunnels between Gaza and Israel, or a full-fledged reoccupation, or something in-between. But the possibility of major civilian casualities was heightened by the fact that it comes immediately after a five-hour “humanitarian truce” that sent much of the population of Gaza into the streets to conduct essential business. Hamas resumed firing rockets into Israel the moment the truce expired, and there are now heavy Israeli airstrikes accompanying the infantry action.

If you have thoughts or prayers to spare, send them to that region as well.
