September 29, 2011 10:10 AM Wild, wild West

By Steve Benen

The political world should at least consider the possibility that Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) is some kind of liberal performance artist, secretly pretending to be a right-wing congressman to make Republicans look like lunatics.

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said Monday that President Obama was intentionally crippling the economy to advance a Marxist political philosophy.

West, a Tea Party freshman, was responding to a question from radio host Michael Berry, who asked if he thought the souring economy should be attributed to either inept or intentional actions on behalf of the president.

“It is intentional,” West said. “It is intentional because this is who the president is. The president is a Marxist because he believes in the separation of classes.”

West went on to say that he believed Obama’s efforts to raise taxes on the richest Americans represented an unprecedented class attack that was historically dangerous.

“We have never heard a president in the United States of America speak as he is…. He is a socialist because he believes in nationalizing production,” West said.

West at least deserves credit for recognizing phrases like “nationalizing production,” but he still sounds like an unhinged wackjob if he believes President Obama in any way resembles a “Marxist.” (Does West understand how much the far-left condemns the president and why?)

As for the notion that Obama’s willingness to ask the very wealthy to sacrifice a little is somehow unprecedented, West may want to consider the attacks levied at FDR.

West was also asked yesterday for his thoughts on Florida congresswoman and Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The right-wing lawmaker said he would “need a bucket” to describe Wasserman Schultz.

You stay classy, Allen.

"The president is a Marxist because he believes in the separation of classes."

I thought Marx believed that class distinctions would/should be eliminated. Unless West is complaining that only Marxists perceive separate classes.

You'll be hard-pressed to find when this noted individual supporter of free markets got a paycheck that wasn't from the Socialist Government.

And wait - after leaving the military he spent a year as A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER! (Those poor kids.)

So, if it was in public school, he was one of those people sucking money away at the teat's of 'The Job Creators.'

    Yes, he's a perfomance artist.
Unfortunately, his 'performance' in Congress, will damage the rest of the country.

West, of course, is someone who's enjoyed a government paycheck and health care for his entire adult life. But what he really means by "Marxism" is any government program that helps people unlike himself (i.e.,fascistic guard dogs of the plutocracy). That's why they call it "class warfare". Help others and you're admitting the dignity and humanity of people fascists instinctively mock as inferior.

Allen West = Deep Cover Liberal

  • stormskies on September 29, 2011 10:32 AM:

The underlying issue of course are the Americans who elected this utter delusional idiot in the first place. No different than the Americans who elected Cantor, Boner, Bachman, and all the other fucking crazies. They got elected. So what in the fuck does that say about this country ? And exactly how is this going to change ?

Marxist, Kenyan, affirmative-action, gangsta, arrogant, anti-Christ. I know I'm leaving stuff out here.

And, by the way, the first CAPTCHA I got had a greek letter 'beta' in it. I'm looking hard here, but I don't see a 'beta' key on my keyboard.

The political world should at least consider the possibility that Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) is some kind of liberal performance artist, secretly pretending to be a right-wing congressman to make Republicans look like lunatics.

This is the same guy who was tossed out of the US Army for effectively murdering a civilian detainee. The man is a lunatic.

And Republicans are more than happy to claim ownership of him. Says all you need to know about him and his party.

  • RepublicanPointOfView on September 29, 2011 11:05 AM:

Marxists are for elimination of class.

We republicans are for separation of class. That is why so many of us live in gated communities with private security guards.

Obama may be a socialist Kenyan, but he is not a Marxist and he sure as hell is not a republican!

"Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said Monday that President Obama was intentionally crippling the economy to advance a Marxist political philosophy."

This makes my head hurt. The reality is that the Republicans in Congress are intentionally crippling the economy to advance their authoritarian plutocracy. This is not speculation or inference. This is documented Republican policy.

As more and more Americans figure this out, the Republicans may be feeling a tad anxious. "Hey," we say after the debt ceiling debacle, "you guys are trying to cripple the economy." West (and others) reassure themselves by coming back with classic Freudian projection, "No! You are trying to cripple the economy, you marxist pinkies!" Black is white. Up is down. Magical thinking. If you say a thing, it must be true.

Really, the lack of self-awareness makes my head hurt. And, jeebus, if the Republicans are going to act like 19th century Freudian caricatures, why can't they adopt a useful defense mechanism, reaction formation, for example. "Look! we're totally about jobs creation. Let's have a WPA!!! Let's socialize the banks!!!! We love, love, love having a black POTUS." I mean these guys are so dangerous and incompetent they can't even get defense mechanisms right.

Notice that while pointing out the obvious Republican electoral strategy of deliberately keeping the economy in the doldrums is still taboo -- it can be hinted at, maybe, but barely if that -- this jackass will face no condemnation from the so-called "liberal media."

When you read or listen to a brainless asshole like West if your sentient or the tiniest bit aware you just shake your head and wonder how this guy came into being. So Obama is trying to wreck the economy because he has some secret plan to turn the country into a marxist state controlled by the govt. Huh? First the worse the economy gets the less likely he is to get reelected. Second I expect if he and his ilk get control of the govt that we'll see and hear him pridefully screaming We're no 10! We're no. 10! We're no. 10!! Go USA.

I'm genuinely surprised it took over ten comments for someone to point out that 24 carat nugget of truth.

is it possible that west suffered some kind of traumatic head injury somewhere along the line?
    just askin'.

  • sparrow on September 29, 2011 1:42 PM:

When I was in the military, I came across, ignorant, self-important, authorative, overbearing, narrow-minded assholes like West who enjoyed the regimented structure of the military in that it provide the perfect environment to allow their type-A personalities to express themselves to the detriment of those who had misfortune to serve under them. I guess in West's case, it proves that you can take the man out of the military but not the military out of the man.

  • tamiasmin on September 29, 2011 1:44 PM:

If Allen West is trying to make Republicans look like lunatics, he's very late to the game and entirely redundant.
