December 31, 2012 12:21 PM Clinton’s Clot, Krauthammer’s Shame

By Mark Kleiman

Earlier this month, Hilary Clinton, having picked up a virus on one of her many overseas trips, became dehydrated, fainted, fell, hit her head, and suffered a concussion. That caused her to postpone her scheduled testimony on the Benghazi pseudo-scandal.

While Clinton was still at home on an IV drip to treat her dehydration, The usual right-wing suspects – John Bolton, Charles Krauthammer (a physician before he became a full-time character assassin), Glenn Reynolds, Sean Hannity, Monica (“Creepy”) Crowley, Allen West – joined in charging her with faking the concussion to avoid testifying, and the Murdoch pseudo-news empire tirelessly repeated their baseless charges about “Benghazi Flu.”

Secretary Clinton was hospitalized after follow-up exams disclosed a blood clot “stemming from” the concussion. Not clear how dangerous the situation is. She’s being treated with anti-coagulants.

So far, not a peep of apology from any of her traducers. One widely-read right-wing blogger chided the State Department for inadequate “people skills” after the Department corrected a false story about the Clintons partying in the Caribbean. The Fox News story on the latest development drops all the previous charges down the Memory Hole. Reynolds links to the blood-clot story, but not to his earlier, widely-linked half-witticism: “Help, I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Testify about Benghazi,” with its disgusting reference to Clinton’s concussion as having “addled her pate,” nor his equally heartless post later. I guess in Tennessee being a Real Man means making fun of sick people.

I know there’s some sentiment among readers that we should stick to our wonkery and remain above partisan warfare. But unless we deal with the meta-problem of the well-financed, fanatical, unprincipled, unpatriotic, and downright mean fringe movement that has succeeded in taking over one of our two political parties and creating a media echo-chamber that isolates not only is ignorant followers but also its leaders from consensus reality, we won’t be able to deal with any of the actual problems.

UPDATE Ann Althouse apparently agrees with me that she is grossly over-placed at Wisconsin and is applying for a job at Tennessee. See, because the press release deoesn’t specify the site of the blood clot, it’s all part of A Conspiracy So Vast….

And yes, her lunatic ravings draw a link from Instapundit.

these people are thugs and have no shame; all we can do is continue to call them out.

I agree, the casual cruelty and conscience free lying is chilling. Is it the Brietbart effect, or did it begin before he polluted the political world? When he collapsed on the Los Angeles street, it seemed to me that all of his venomous hatred overwhelmed his physical being.

Exhibit A for the argument that Obama derangement has (at least among the moderately well educated and above) relatively little to do with race and everything to do with those who are deranged. If Hilary were president right now, we'd miss some of the uglier manifestations of base racism among poor whites, but most everything else would be the same. Even the crypto-racism transfers pretty easily: Hilary is trying to take your money and give it to her friends, those people. (So in that sense it is racist, but not racism about a black President.)

Krauthammer plays physician from time to time (often laughably), but he hasn't had a license to practice medicine in 30 years. The whole Hilary in '16 nonsense has mostly been driven by these people anyway. It should be no surprise that they'd go back to the same old stuff they've wanted to recycle in the first place.

I wish Democrats and liberals would stop decrying the lack of shame on the part of Republicans. We might as well get outraged at the instinctual drive of ticks or leeches to attach themselves to a warm vertebrate and suck its blood. A lack of shame means nothing to Republicans, because one of the distinguishing characteristics of sociopaths is a lack of empathy and concern for others. Without them, the ability to feel shame is nonexistent.

As for the mentally-disturbed Krauthammer, he's not just a physician, he's a psychiatrist. If a remake of "Dr. Strangelove" is ever done, Krauthammer is a slam-dunk choice to play the title role.

Hillary Hating never went away. Don't you remember the vilely obscene misogyny of the 2008 primary campaign? Republicans suddenly discovered their admiration for Hillary after they thought they could use her loss as a wedge issue to pry voters away from Obama, but the leopard doesn't change its spots -- the minute Obama appointed her Secretary of State, Camille Paglia (a reliable megaphone for any crazy conspiracy theory on the right) asked rhetorically "What do the Clintons have on Obama?"

Racist dog whistles are the character-assassination weapon of choice, but do you think we wouldn't be hearing anti-female dog-whistles if Hillary had won?

  • biggerbox on January 02, 2013 10:45 AM:

If there is anyone in the world who should take the risks of hitting one's head seriously, you'd think it would be Charles Krauthammer. Does he only count blows that end up with you in a wheelchair? Sheesh.

  • esaud on January 02, 2013 11:25 AM:

The real scandal is that the corporate owned media let this crapola go under the radar screen.

Remember how it was considered out of bounds when (Democrat) Hilary Rosen pointed out that Ann Romney never worked? The collective village had the vapors over that one.

But ugly character assasination from supposed main stream pundits like Krauthammer? Silence.

  • RepublicanPointOfView on January 02, 2013 12:36 PM:

    What a load of bullsh!t...

Everyone knows that Hillary is still faking it to avoid testifying about Benghasi. If she dies from this 'blood clot', it will just be further proof that the Clintons and the democrats (especially Obama) will go to any and all lengths to cover up their coverup.

  • smartalek on January 02, 2013 12:46 PM:

Bluestatedon said it earlier, and better than I would have.
But here's a corollary not yet stated here:
I really, really wish the entire reality-based blogosphere would call a moratorium on the use of terms such as "mean," "cruel," "nasty," "ruthless," "heartless," etcetc, in referring to Publicans; their Village/MSM mouthpieces; their corporate owner/operators; and their various acts, statements, and policy preferences.
Can it really be that you still, after all this time, do not get it that to them, these are compliments?

  • Vicente Fox on January 02, 2013 12:50 PM:

Krauthammer is a slam-dunk choice to play the title role.

He's great on "The Walking Dead".

Please, can we hold off on the Tennessee bashing. It is certainly not appropriate in a column usually written by a native Georgian.
