here to read Amy Graham and Nicholas Thompson's article in the September
2001 Washington Monthly: Broken
Ranks. U.S. News' rankings measure everything but what matters. And most
universities don't seem to mind. Graham is the former director of data
research for U.S. News and World Report. Thompson is an editor of The
Monthly.
Last year, Thompson wrote another article about the origins of the rankings and their problems for the Washington Monthly---Playing With Numbers---as well as a piece for Slate---Cooking the School Books (Yet Again)---after the 2001 rankings came out. As part of his Washington Monthly piece, Thompson also posted an internal report of the magazine's critiquing the rankings. You can read U.S. News' response to that report by clicking here. Four years ago, Thompson also worked on a campaign critical of the rankings. To return to The Washington Monthly, click here. The rest of the September 2001 issue will be posted on August 28th.
